The CoDrone EDU (JROTC edition) was created to meet funding requirements for the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) programs. It’s the same drone as the CoDrone EDU, but with specific components sourced from different manufacturers to meet these requirements. The JROTC edition of the CoDrone EDU was created with inclusiveness in mind, so students in JROTC can also be part of our learning community and participate in the Aerial Drone Competition.

What is the CoDrone EDU (JROTC edition)?

The CoDrone EDU (JROTC edition) was created to meet funding requirements for Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) programs. JROTC program funding has specific sourcing restrictions on the devices that are used. The JROTC edition of the CoDrone EDU was created with inclusiveness in mind, so students in JROTC can also be part of our learning community.

Why does the CoDrone EDU (JROTC edition) cost more?

The processor chip and the communication chip needed to be sourced from other manufacturers to meet sourcing requirements for JROTC. These components are more expensive than the CoDrone EDU’s parts, so the price of the JROTC edition is higher.

Should I buy the CoDrone EDU (JROTC edition)?: The short answer: If you aren't part of a JROTC program, you can probably save the $100 per unit and just get the standard edition of the CoDrone EDU. You can visit our blog post for a more detailed explanation of who the JROTC edition was made for, and why you might want to buy it even if you aren't in a JROTC program.
Are CoDrone EDU accessories compatible with the CoDrone EDU (JROTC edition)?: Yes! Most parts are compatible, including batteries, propellers, and motors. The JROTC edition does have USB-C ports on the drone and controller, so there is a difference there. For those accessories, we will be releasing JROTC edition-specific accessories. Is the CoDrone EDU (JROTC edition) a better drone than the CoDrone EDU?: The specs are the same between the standard and the JROTC edition. The performance is the same between the two editions, so you won't have any advantages with the JROTC edition in the Aerial Drone Competition. The major differences are in regards to the USB-C ports, the controller being powered by the same battery as the drone, and the way that the controller powers on.
