Our 4S Ranch Learning Center is located inside the YY Art Center in the beautiful North County of San Diego. The Learning Center is equipped with classrooms, robotics tools, components, laptops, wi-fi, and competition arenas.  Classes are hands-on, project-based learning meant to teach foundational principles of STEM, including writing code, physics, mechanical engineering, among others.  They will learn how to problem-solve and think creatively.  Students will also learn about the latest trends in robotics.  We offer Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level classes.

Course Descriptions

Competitions: Sumo Competition

Rokit Smart is a robotics kit consisting of many mechanical components such as an Arduino-compatible circuit board, DC motors, peg boards, a nut driver and screw driver with real nuts and bolts, and more.  In our course, students will learn the fundamentals of engineering and mechanics by building various robots such as a Crab Robot, a Truck Robot, a Line Follower Robot, among others.  They will become familiar with topics such as how a circuit board works, how IR sensors are used to navigate or avoid obstacles, how motors are used to create motion, and how a Segway balances itself.  More advanced students will begin to learn how to program these robots and start customizing them to behave in their own way.  The course develops students’ mechanical skills, their understanding of physics, coding skills, and challenges them to think creatively and critically.

Duration: 20 lessons

Competitions: Drone Competition and Online Competitions

The CoDrone is the first consumer drone designed specifically for education. It comes with many mechanical components that teach students mechanical and programming skills. Students start off by building the remote from its components to improve their mechanical skills. Then they will learn skills and topics that are a bit more advanced than the Rokit Smart courses, such as standard loops and conditional statements, programming coordinates, programmed autonomous flight, uploading programs.  As students advance in the course, they will be able to take on Missions, which are challenges to solve puzzles or overcome obstacles.  It’s a great way for students to develop more advanced engineering skills.

VEX IQ

Duration: 5 – 6 month commitment (enrollment open Aug – Sep only)

Competitions: State Competition, Regional Competition, and World Competition

VEX IQ is a third-party robotics kit developed by VEX Robotics.  It’s a tool-less robotics kit build for STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) education.  Students can participate in statewide, regional, and even world competitions if they qualify (which several have participated in and won).  Robolink prepares students to become competitive players in these competitions.  Geared more towards younger teens to really challenge their critical thinking skills, students will learn intermediate engineering topics such as building lift systems, using interacting crown gears, drive systems for movement, and writing functions to program the remote control.  These will be used to solve the several challenges that they will face in these competitions.  While it’s a bigger commitment, it will help students develop strong analytical thinking and nurture a competitive spirit.
